Chapter Eleven

I could see Olivia as she rode in the combine, a smile on her face the size of the sun. She had been going nonstop with me since she got here this morning, but it was almost time for lunch. I had hoped to see Olga by now, but she hadn’t arrived and it made me wonder if she would. It dawned on me last night as I was walking back to my truck at the wedding venue that I still hadn’t told her about the catfishing scheme. I was already dangerously close to having waited too long, but I have so much fun when I’m with her, I keep forgetting about the picture. The picture which was now thrown in my dresser drawer, discarded one night from my pants pocket and never picked up again. I hadn’t checked my fake Lots of Fish in the Sea profile or searched for Susan Walters, either. I found Olga and the rest had fallen away as unimportant.

The combine slowed and idled in park as the door opened. I jogged into the field through the part of the wheat already cut and helped Olivia down from the machine.

“She’s seriously brilliant!” Nate yelled over the engine. “She asked great questions and I hope she had some fun. We’re nearly done. We’ll stop by the house when we are.”

“Sounds good, I’ll be there somewhere,” I yelled back, giving him the thumbs up.

He slammed the door and I took Olivia’s hand, running through the field again so Nathan could start the combine. Once we were on the road, Olivia started chatting a mile a minute.

“That was so cool!” she exclaimed. “The combine is gigantic, but super easy to drive,” she chattered.

“They’re fun, for sure, but they’re also dangerous. Did Nate talk to you about how careful you have to be around farm machinery?” I asked as we trotted down the road toward my farm.

She nodded, a seriousness settling over her. “He showed me all the safety features and explained them all. I know they’re dangerous and you have to respect them because they can kill you.”

I tugged on her braid. “You got it. I know they’re fun and exciting, but I wanted to make sure you understood they’re also powerful and dangerous. Are you ready for some lunch?”

She rubbed her belly. “I’m starving. Being on a farm is hard work.”

I chuckled as we crossed the road and started up the gravel drive to the house. “You’re not kidding. I can eat as much as I want and never have to worry about gaining a pound, even in the winter. I was thinking we’d have some fresh corn and tomatoes with an egg salad sandwich. How does that sound?” I asked her.

“Yum-o.” We both stopped short when we noticed a familiar Ford Escape in the driveway. “Olga’s here!” Olivia exclaimed as she ran the rest of the way, around the house and I assumed to the deck. I followed, wondering how Olga was feeling today. I hadn’t heard from her at all, not even a text this morning like she usually does.
